Here are some of my favourite families. They have me back year after year to give them cherished memories. I am very honoured to have the opportunity to do this for them, and I know they will always look at their images and feel the same love when it was captured.
Timeless, Candid, Simply Beautiful

Adobe InDesign 101

I am currently enrolled in 2 college programs to better enhance my knowledge and products I can offer my clientele. I'll be sharing my progress as I hand in projects for InDesign and Illustrator.
Be nice ok...
In this project we had to make a 2 piece spread in InDesign. I used my LOVE of gardening as inspiration. Pictures are all taken in my North Oshawa backyard, except for the cow.
When I figure out how to add a drop shadow in InDesign I'll be adding that to the Jalapeño Heading.
If you need some Jalapeño inspiration to add some heat this winter I'd recommend www.davidlebovitz.com for your pickled jalapeños. This is our tried and true go to for our summer haul.

This is the second assignment for InDesign. I used the project to make my headshot handout/brochure, so you will have to picture this with a fold on either side.  There are a few elements I had to add to show I am capable of certain tools, so a lot of text wrap, I'm not a huge fan of that, along with cutouts. I'm happy with the project, and received full marks on both.

This was a half page invite, we could choose what. I used the OAA upcoming show. (now cancelled) My mother is involved with the www.oshawaartassociation.com so this was a nice 2 for one.

Making a menu was our last assignment. This is our pub we frequent, I have not asked their permission however I'm sure they'll like what I've created here. These are also not my photos, just googled pub photos so not taking any credit for that. Unfortunately they are not doing take out because they do cook all of their food in an oven not deep fried. The food always comes out crispy and delicious without all the grease you get with a traditional deep fry.  So once this is all over check them out.

Adobe Illustrator 101

The TTC map is for Illustrator. We had to trace the lines using pen tool, add all the text and use image trace to add the Go Train logos, Via Train logo and TTC logo.
This took a very long time to complete. I reached the point where I thought this project was going to break me, but pushed through. I'm pleased with the result. Fingers crossed I receive full marks for this also.

This project required we take half a face, draw on it and use the mesh tool to create gradients to make the object/face look more 3 dimensional. We had a choice of obvious celebs like Oprah, Lennon, Marilyn, Elvis...Sigh. For those of you that know me well this is a far more inspirational person. If you don't know him. Ask me, please. I'm including the original in case it's not too obvious from my "drawing"

This project we had to create flowers and use the symbol tool, as well as a repeating pattern. I added a window, kind of like an isolation reminder of being inside.

Summer

Shot this headshot of Miss Summer, a young and budding actress and singer.
Really love the way the light is in her eyes, just stunning!

Headshots Durham

This woman needs no introduction. Eileen Myers
Had lots of fun shooting Headshots for my mother today. She is swapping headshots with another Artist friend so they can paint each other for a class at Gallery 67. The OAA or Oshawa Art Association puts on great classes at reasonable prices. www.oshawaartassociation.com for more information.

Black and White Headshot

I found this Headshot to be very personal. These are the eyes that I have to explain why I do the silly and sometimes questionable things I do. Be very Afraid.

Berkeley Fieldhouse

Mike and Nadine were married last October on what was the last best weather day of October. The sun was shining, the weather was warm and everybody was smiling. This couple was described in a speech by a friend as the most caring, generous and loving couple. They truly do care about their family and friends, and this wedding was a real honour to be a part of. They say we choose friends who are a little bit like us or resemble us in some way. Well, imaging the group I was blessed to be around with this couple being the most caring individuals ever!

I have described this wedding to my family and friends as the wedding I want to shoot for the rest of my career.

Great people, amazing couple, style, stunning dress and details, fun and exciting location at Berkeley Fieldhouse, www.berkeleyevents.com and the best hands down bread dance.

During the cocktails I was speaking with another couple who's wedding I shot the year previous, and I told them, "You are my favourite couple," because up until that point they really were my favourite couple. To which they replied, "I don't know, you may just have a new favourite!" (referring to Mike and Nadine) All I can say with certainty is that I have the best clients!

Lets talk about the venue, Berkeley Fieldhouse. AMAZING! There is an upstairs 1950's style dressing room (my year approximation may be off) red walls, mirrors with lights. White painted bricks and barn board like walls. Great doorways with chipping paint (it's a photographer thing). Let's not forget a babbling brook, a tree house, retro style hanging lights under a canopy. Did I miss anything, oh ya, the front entrance with modern line backdrop. Love this venue, it was my first and hopefully not last time shooting here, and there are so many possibilities. Also a retro camper!! The venue is right beside Berkeley Church, another great location.

The styling of the event was from one of Nadine's acquaintances and phenomenal job. Really enjoyed all the little touches, the style was so perfect for the couple.

Enough babbling, love this wedding, if you are a fun and caring couple like Mike and Nadine, consider hiring me, I'd be honoured to be a part of another wonderful wedding.

Candid Family Portraits

Here is my best friend in the whole world's family. I'm sure that grammar is improper and she is a teacher and will scold me for that! I love taking pictures of Ben. He is such a character, and I'm sure with his influence baby Oliver will be nothing short of a funny man too. I'm always struggling with the rules of photography and portraiture when it comes to making nice pictures of families. As a photographer people assume I can make their babies smile, or children laugh, to which I often say, I'm not a clown! But I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. And the best trick is making the parents work for that smile. You know the funny things that your kids laugh at hysterically right? Well, as you can see, Ben thinks his Dad's jokes are the bee's knees.

So here you go world, non traditional family portraits. Simple, candid, and downright beautiful if I do say so myself.

Save the Date

I have wanted to write about this day for quite some time. This wedding occurred quite by accident and fate definitely had some part. It's kind of a long story! Arn't they all? It goes like this...

My long time friend from high school phones me at midnight on a Friday. My immediate thoughts are "are you drunk calling me?'
No. He goes on to tell me that he needs my help to shoot this wedding for his close friends the next day. Crazy right. I reluctantly agreed, not knowing what I was getting into. My thoughts remained on his words, "please, you'll save the day Heather, please!"
I tried to sleep that night to have a fresh head for the morning travel, and shoot the next day. I had some trouble as you may imagine. However I did arrive, and met my friend who introduced me to Colleen. She was so happy to meet me and I knew instantly that this was going to be a great day. The wedding was beautiful. I know every photographer says this, but it was. The couple Adam and Colleen were so easy to work for. Their love for each other was quiet through the day, but you could see and feel the intense emotion. Their family and friends were so grateful that I could help them out and capture the day for them. Almost all of the family and quite a few friends personally thanked me for coming on such short notice, and "saving the day."

The venue was Asbury Hall and it is absolutely stunning. The venue is owned by Righteous Babe Music or Ani Difranco, who I'm told bought the venue to save it from being torn down. Ani Difranco's music was a soundtrack for the end of high school for me, so this was another twist of fate saying "ha ha, knew you'd be here" The basement of the venue has old posters and concert stuff from Ani, very cool to any fan. The architecture, buildings and alleys of the area provided a great backdrop for the after ceremony shoot.

The party was GREAT. Mikey did a fantastic job of keeping everyone dancing and bringing true excitement to the party. I hope every DJ out there has the opportunity to be at an event with this man when he brings the party. He plays songs that I don't hear at every wedding. If I hear "Celebrate good times Come on" one more time at a wedding, I know it is because you are just not trying anymore. We are getting off topic here...

This is by far my favourite wedding of my career. It resonated with me in a way I can't describe. Sometimes life gives you a call in the middle of the night asking you to do something. I hope I get the opportunity to answer that call from fate again.

Thank you Mikey for believing in me.
